England Golf Courses

England has more than 1,900 registered golf clubs (England Golf, 2024). As a result, it has more courses than any other UK country. The spread is wide too, since Lancashire links, Surrey heathland and Yorkshire moorland all sit within a few hours of each other.

The south-east is the most tightly packed golfing region. Surrey alone has over 80 courses, among them Wentworth, Sunningdale and Walton Heath. Meanwhile Kent offers Royal St George's at Sandwich, a regular Open host, plus a string of fine clifftop and downland clubs.

The north-west is the links heartland. The Lancashire coast between Southport and Blackpool holds Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes, Formby and Hillside. Few stretches of coast anywhere can match it. Yorkshire adds Ganton and Moortown, while the north-east has cliff-top links at Bamburgh and Seahouses.

Green fees run from under £15 at council courses to £200 or more at the top venues. However, most English clubs still welcome visitors without membership. It is worth booking ahead, since weekend tee times go quickly.

Inland courses stay playable through most of the winter, although the coast turns windy from autumn onward. Spring and early summer bring the steadiest conditions, and long evenings make twilight rounds good value. Green fees also drop after about 4pm at many clubs.
