Axe Cliff Golf Club

Axe Cliff occupies high ground above Seaton on the Devon coast, where the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site drop towards the waters of Lyme Bay. The course is laid out in a links-style manner across this exposed clifftop terrain, meaning the ground plays firm and the turf close-cropped in the manner more usually associated with seaside golf than inland parkland. Its position leaves it open to the coastal winds that sweep in from the Channel, which shape the way the course plays from one day to the next and add an extra dimension to club selection and shot-making. Seaton itself sits at the mouth of the River Axe, a small Devon resort town within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the surrounding coastline is noted for its exposed geology, with the cliffs around Axe Cliff forming part of the wider Jurassic Coast stretching from Exmouth to Studland. Visibility from the higher parts of the course extends out across Lyme Bay towards Dorset, taking in a stretch of coastline that has long drawn walkers and geologists as well as golfers. The combination of clifftop position, links character and open exposure to the weather gives Axe Cliff a distinct identity among Devon's golf courses.
