Gatley lies on the southern edge of Greater Manchester, close to Cheadle and within the wider Stockport borough, in the belt of suburban south Manchester that sits between the city centre and the Cheshire countryside further south. This part of Greater Manchester was largely farmland until the railway reached out from Manchester in the nineteenth century, after which villages like Gatley and Cheadle grew steadily into commuter suburbs while retaining pockets of older, more rural land around them. A nine-hole course in this setting sits within that suburban fringe, closer to the character of the Cheshire Plain immediately to the south than to the industrial townscape of central Manchester. Manchester Airport lies only a short distance away, a reminder of how built-up this corner of Greater Manchester has become, yet the immediate area around Gatley retains enough green space to support a golf course within easy reach of the city centre. The Cheshire countryside beyond Wilmslow and Alderley Edge begins within a few miles to the south.
