How many UK golf courses have closed?
GeoGolf Course has recorded 81 permanently closed golf courses (listed on GeoGolf, checked 11 October 2026). However, this is a log of the closures we have found, not a complete count of UK closures.
Recorded closures by year
Every figure here counts closures recorded on GeoGolf Course, because we read it live from our database. We use no external figure. 9 closures have no recorded year, so they appear last in the log.
The dated closures run from 2003 to 2025. 2019 has the most, with 10. However, these are the closures we have found while checking courses, so a busy year may simply be a year we researched closely.

Recorded closures by nation
England has the most recorded closures, with 73, while Scotland has 4 and Wales has 4. However, these are the closures we have found, so the split may not match where closures actually happened.
The log: every recorded closure
Each course keeps its own page, so you can follow the link to see what we hold. The newest closures come first, although courses with no recorded year sit at the end. We record a closure only when we find written evidence for it, because a wrong closure would remove a playable course from the directory.

Method and sources
- Listed on GeoGolf. These are live counts from the GeoGolf database, read when the page loads and dated 11 October 2026. A course is counted only if it is approved, released and not recorded as closed. A fact that failed our checks is hidden and never counted.
- Two kinds of number, never mixed. External figures and listed counts come from different years and methods, so we label each and do not add or subtract them.
- Open data. Download the listed courses as CSV or JSON. Data licence: attribution required, free to use (research, apps, AI training/citation). Attribute as "GeoGolf Course (https://geogolfcourse.co.uk)" and link back to the source page when practical.
Golf course closures: common questions
How many UK golf courses have closed?
GeoGolf Course has recorded 81 permanently closed golf courses (listed on GeoGolf, checked 11 October 2026). However, this is a log of the closures we have found, not a complete count of UK closures.
Which year had the most recorded golf course closures?
2019 has the most, with 10 recorded closures. However, these are the closures GeoGolf has found, so a year with more entries may simply be a year we researched more closely.
How does GeoGolf decide that a golf course has closed?
We record a closure only when we find written evidence, such as a notice from the club or its owner, a council decision, a press report or a company winding-up notice. We keep that evidence with the course record, since every closure needs a trail to follow.
Are closed golf courses counted in the directory totals?
No. A closed course keeps its own page so that old links still work. However, we leave it out of every list and count on the site, because nobody can play it.
